Harbor City Elementary improved the overall percentage of students achieving high standards in writing by 28 percentile points from 2005-2009. PLC’s throughout the school with emphasis on Continuous Improvement from Kindergarten through 6th grade helped the school view writing as a whole school process. Reading and Math scores were down in both 3rd and 4th grades from last year as the percent of students not making an annual learning gains the lowest 25% increased.

              
Please present additional information that indicates your efforts to build a professional learning community have had a positive impact on students and/or teachers.

Harbor City Elementary made a grade of “C” in 04-05. At the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year, whole school PLC’s were implemented. A grade of “A” was achieved in 2005-2006. PLC’s were continued for the 2006-2007 school year. A grade of “A” and AYP was achieved at the end of 2006-2007. As we continue to improve on our PLC commitment, a grade of “A” has been achieved each school year through 2009. The growth of our PLC continues and remains to be a positive aspect throughout our school.  This school year, grade level PLC groups came up with group norms and SMART goals which were used in developing teacher Professional Development Plans. Developing Common Assessments is the next goal we will be working  toward in our PLC groups.

 

Please elaborate upon strategies you have found to be effective in any of the following areas:

1. Monitoring student learning on a timely basis.

Student data and Response to Intervention strategies (RtI) are reviewed weekly through our A+ PLC. Teachers bring student progression sheets that contain state assessment data, district assessment data, and progress monitoring data to the meetings. Our A+ PLC, which includes teachers, administration, guidance counselor, Reading Coach and RtI Coach, work together to come up with intervention strategies and enrichment for individual and groups of students.

 

2. Creating systems of intervention to provide students with additional time and support for learning.

  • Staggering the 90 minute reading block, as well as the 30 minute intensive intervention block has allowed us to serve our students in the bottom quartile more effectively.
  • Whole school inclusion services to provide ongoing in class support.
  • Title I intervention through “push-in” support.
  • Teen Trendsetter program to provide reading support for third graders attending after care.
  • Professional development on data analysis and differentiated instructional strategies to effectively utilize teacher instructional time.
  • Rolling Reader one on one and group mentoring to support literacy.
  • Our Raising Expectations Club (REC) matches faculty and staff members with students in the lowest 25% for mentoring throughout the school year.
  • Maximum participation and high quality instructors through summer and after school remediation programs.

3. Building the capacity of teachers to work as members of high performing collaborative teams who focus the efforts of their team on improved learning for students.

  • Each week, teachers and administration meet for our A+ PLC where data is reviewed, intervention groups discussed and along with best practices.
  • Once a month, teachers meet in grade level PLC’s. The team comes up with an agenda and goals/strategies notes are given to administration to keep them informed of team discussions.
  • One in every four faculty meetings are used for vertical team PLC’s to encourage cross grade collaboration and planning for student progression through data.
  • Release time is given at the end of the teacher day to support staff led book studies on educational topics. Time is given in faculty meetings to share insights from the book studies with the whole faculty.
  • Harbor City has a cross grade level Reading Leadership Team (RLT) that works together to look at whole school trends and data in reading and make school wide decisions. Grade levels break off from the RLT and complete the same activities as a grade level.
  • PLC groups have been implemented for the 2008-09 school year in the areas of Math, Science, Writing and Parent Involvement.
  • A PLC has been generated for special reading programs that teachers can use during their iii reading block.
  • Our guidance counselor and a classroom teacher conduct a weekly PLC on helping faculty and staff use conversational Spanish to support our ELL student population.
  • Weekly Technology PLC’s are offered based on teacher need.
  • A new PLC was implemented this year by a team of faculty members led by the guidance counselor for Character Education.  This group comes up with projects to enhance and support character education throughout the school year.

  • Harbor City brought the school grade from a “C” in 2004-2005 to an “A” in 2005-2006. The school was recognized by the Governor as one of the top 100 schools in the State of Florida for the most “year to year” progress.
  • Florida Department of Recognition (2006) as a Turnaround Principal for increasing the school’s rating by two letter grades in one year.
  • In 2006-2007 Harbor City made AYP and achieved an “A” grade.
  • Harbor City has maintained a grade of “A” or “B” since the 2005-2006 school year.
  • Harbor City was awarded an Honorable Mention for our school recycling program.
  • Harbor City Elementary’s Future Problem Solvers teams took several awards in 2008 at the state level.
  • Our cafeteria has earned the 5 Star Quality & Performance Inspection Award for the last 11 years.
  • Harbor City was awarded the Speak Up 200 School Award by Project Tomorrow as one of the top K-12 schools in the country that encourage and involve authentic student, parent and teacher ideas and views in local education planning and decision-making.
  • Presented the Keep Brevard Beautiful Environmental Award.
  • Harbor City has been given the Golden School Award for our successful volunteer program.
  • Our School Age Child Care Program has been awarded the Gold Key Certificate for having outstanding safety procedures.
  • Harbor City was awarded the ATTAIN Award for meeting high expectations in the area of technology.
  • Harbor City was recognized by the Florida Department of Education as a Power Library School for having an outstanding school Media Center.
